Overpowered - an Android app for gamers

Ovepowered is the second project I’ve worked on for Newsfusion. The eSport industry has been tracking heavy traffic in recent years, with Twitch becoming the No. 1 streaming app for gamers to showcase their prowess and get followers and YouTube trying to even the market with YouTube Gaming.

We knew we didn’t have the resources to beat these giants, so our approach was slightly different:

Concept

Be a better gamer

Overpowered is a passion project for Nati, one of our CEOs, an avid gamer himself. He envisioned an app where gamers could quickly and easily find great video tutorials and other information on how to overpower a certain game, character or level. This evolution of the gamer from beginner to master is personified by OP, our brand character.

Parallel to that, we wanted to give beginner and mid-level gamers a community, or Guild, where they can attract followers with their own content.

  • Get better – Provide gamers with a searchable, fine-tuned and reliable sources of video and text tutorials on a per-game basis.
  • Become a master – A Guild is where gamers can share their progress, gain reputation points and followers and become influencers.
  • Stay informed – Provide a place where gamers can find the latest and best gaming news, deals and gameplay videos.

Providing gamers with tools for success

Product market fit for Overpowered are gamers who want to level up quickly and possibly create a name for themselves as influnecers by helping others. Thus, our main features were designed to help them learn quickly, teach others effectively and stay informed on all latest news.

We combined all this with a gamification system so gamers can keep up on their progress via Reputation points, Badges and a scoreboard for each game individually.

We have a bot for that

One unique feature we wanted as a “WOW!” effect was a bot that would find answers for questions asked in the Guilds. Any question posted would automatically send our bot to search YouTube for a video with an answer. If the gamer was satisfied with the result s/he could verify it and it would appear as the selected answer for his question.
